The brewery with three names

How many names do you have? Most of you probably have one, maybe some have a shortened versions of your name or a nickname . But there is a brewery in Somerville that is so good that it deserves three names!

If you are into the local craft beers in Greater Boston, you'd probably recognize few big names such as Aeronaut, Harpoon, Trillium, and Night Shift. But, have you ever heard of Slumbrew, American Fresh, and Somerville Brewing Company?

All three names describe one brewing company with the philosophy "make good liquids, make good friends." They have 3 locations, a brewery/bar in Boynton Yards near Union Square in Somerville, an outdoor beer garden (will be back in summer 2018) in Assembly Square in Somerville, and a brewpub also in Assembly Square.

TL;DR: They deserve a fourth name, "The brewery for all" for their beer selection, food options, and events.

Beers for all

They feature many types of beers, so no matter what you like, you should be able to find a beer or two that would satisfy your taste. Here are some examples of the beers they usually have on tap:

  1. Flagraiser IPA with Galaxy hops for IPA lovers
  2. Trekker Trippel the Belgian golden ale with fruity notes
  3. Happy Sol an American Hefeweizen with balance of wheat and citrus
  4. Porter Square Porter brewed with cacao nibs from Taza Chocolate factory next door
  5. {GF} Yourself the gluten free pale ale to provide beer for those who cannot drink most beers

At any of their locations, you should start with a flight of beer. They have a few flight options that they have put together, but you can also create your own flight. This is especially helpful since they have 10+ beers on tap at any given time and by ordering a flight, you avoid the decision paralysis. Also, their beer-tail (cocktails that contain beers) selection sound interesting as well.

They also have amazing seasonal, limited offering beers, all with interesting names. Some examples are Halloween special pumpkin beer called the "Slumkin pumpkin," Belgian strong ale called "Yankee Swap 2017,"  and the nitro stout with an amusing name of "#thanksobama." This was the smoothiest and lightest nitro stout that I have had (and I've had a lot). I loved the fact that it was light enough to be a day drinking beer with its 5.5% ABV.

Nitro Stout called #Thanksobama. The server described the beer to be as "smooth as Obama."

Food, comedy, trivia, oh my!

Along with their great beer selection, Slumbrew also features amazing food as well. From their charcuterie boards named after their beers, BBQ pulled pork pizza with Happy Sol (see above) beer BBQ sauce, to their Porter Square Porter (see above) ice cream, they've got it all.

At some point, you might wonder "What can't Somerville Brewing Company do?"

Sorry to disappoint you, but they're also good with entertainment.

Slumbrew at Boynton Yard: Trivia on Monday nights, once a month spent grain bread making class, brewery Tours on Saturdays, and Liquid Courage Comedy Club on Sunday nights

American Fresh Brewhouse at Assembly Square: Trivia on Tuesday nights and once a month 5k run

Whether you like to bake, run, or watch a comedy show, they've got it all. It's almost like they want you there every day of the week!

Final Thoughts

Even with countless breweries in the Greater Boston area, Somerville Brewing Company is still one of my favorites. They have a variety of good beers, amazing food, and provide a great atmosphere for any mood you may be in. This would be a perfect place to take that out-of-town friend who wants to see what Boston is all about. You'll get to show them our love for beer, food, and good company.
